Nauru is considered the largest (and smallest) island nation in the world. It is, however, a territory within the Republic of Kiribati, which is situated over 2,000 miles from the nearest major land mass. Nauru also features a small population of 10,000 people, most of whom are Nauruan. The capital, Yaren, is a blend of local and western influences, and features a large number of government buildings and public services. Nauru is, nonetheless, a largely undeveloped island, as it remains only a minor tourist destination.
